Afroman has been to Gainesville many times and usually draws a nice crowd.įor some bluesy swamp soul, check out Jacksonville's JJ Grey & Mofro, friends of Gainesville and regulars on the jam circuit. Rounding out the hip-hop for this week is Afroman, who will play The Venue on Tuesday night. He is probably best known for his hit single “Woo-Hah!! (Got You All In Check)” in 1996 and “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” in 1997. He will play tonight at The Venue.īusta Rhymes shouldn't need much of an introduction, since he, like Bone Thugs, made his mark in the music world during the era of music videos, both as a member of Leaders of the New School and as a solo artist. And, our very own DP will open the show at 9 p.m.Ī brand new addition to this week's lineup features another legend in hip-hop, the lightning-lipped Busta Rhymes. But I feel with this show there are enough die-hards mixed with nostalgics to balance out the crowd nicely. Even the song titles point to a new direction for the group, with songs such as “Rebirth,” “A New Mind=A New Life” and “Fearless.” The old looking, but new sounding Bone Thugs will try and please a Gainesville audience that's hard to please, especially when it comes to hip-hop. On this record, an older, wiser Bone Thugs offers perspective, life experiences and even religious guidance thanks to lyrical contributions from Bizzy Bone, the group's fastest-firing rapper. With the band back together, so to speak, Bone Thugs put together a mixture of old and new flavors, perhaps in a joint effort to both please the faithful and cross over into rap's new pop-laden world. They are touring in promotion of the 2010 release, “Uni5: The World's Enemy,” which is the first album recorded by the group's original five members in more than 10 years. I've tried looking into it and to the best of my knowledge they haven't played here probably since the '90s. Now, Bone Thugs are back touring, making records and trying to reintegrate themselves into a hip-hop scene that's changed quite a bit since they left.įriday night at The Venue, a theater getting a lot of action recently, will be the setting for Bone Thugs' Gainesville debut. Their hit single “Tha Crossroads,” which took the world by storm in 1995 because of the diverse nature of the rappers in the group, the '50s vocal sound and the music video (remember those?), made them fixtures in the hip-hop scene until their hiatus in the early 2000s.

If you grew up in the '90s, like I did, it's almost an impossibility that you didn't listen to Bone Thugs-n-Harmony.
